Tony Matos
Head Coach, Lake Oconee Wild Things

Tony Matos brings a wealth of experience and passion to his role as the new Head Coach of the Lake Oconee Wild Things. With a baseball journey spanning over two decades, Tony has transitioned from a dedicated player to an inspiring coach, committed to developing young talent and fostering a winning culture.

Playing Career

Tony's baseball career began in his hometown of Hoschton, Georgia, where he honed his skills and developed a deep love for the game. He played collegiate baseball for five years, making significant contributions at West Georgia Technical College, Newberry College, and Emmanuel College. At Newberry College, Tony was a key member of the 2019 team that clinched the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) regular-season championship, marking a historic achievement for the program. During the 2019 season, he appeared in 33 games, starting 13, and posted a .292 batting average with 19 hits, 16 runs scored, and 16 RBIs.

Coaching and Teaching Career

After concluding his playing career, Tony seamlessly transitioned into coaching, bringing his on-field experience and leadership skills to the next generation of players. He currently serves as the Head Varsity Baseball Coach and Health & Physical Education Teacher at Barrow Arts and Sciences Academy (BASA) in Winder, Georgia. Since taking on this role, Tony has been instrumental in developing the school's baseball program, emphasizing not only athletic excellence but also personal growth and academic achievement.

Tony's coaching philosophy centers on the belief that the lessons learned on the baseball field—discipline, teamwork, resilience—translate directly to life beyond the game. He is dedicated to mentoring his players, instilling in them the values of hard work, integrity, and perseverance.

Personal Life

Outside of coaching, Tony is a devoted family man who enjoys spending quality time with his loved ones. His hobbies include working out, watching sports, playing pickleball, and exploring nature through hiking. A man of faith, Tony continually seeks to grow his relationship with the Lord and incorporates his values into his coaching and daily life.

As he steps into his role with the Lake Oconee Wild Things, Tony is enthusiastic about the opportunity to lead a talented group of young men in the competitive Sunbelt Conference. He is committed to building a team that not only excels on the field but also makes a positive impact in the community. With his extensive background as a player and coach, Tony Matos is poised to guide the Wild Things to new heights and establish a legacy of excellence.
